Katz Dermatology Birthmarks Removal

What are Birthmarks?

Birthmarks are discolorations on the skin which are noticeable at birth, or shortly afterwards. Birthmarks come in two (2) different categories, Vascular birthmarks and Pigmented Birthmarks.

Vascular birthmarks are caused by abnormal blood vessels that did not form correctly. They commonly appear in red pigment, but they could also appear in pink or purple.

Pigmented birthmarks,on the other hand, could be flat or elevated and commonly brown in color. A possible cause for this kind of birthmark may simply because of the over accumulation of melanin pigment in the deeper layers of our skin. It is most commonly seen on infants which is known in the term "Mongolian spot".

I have a birthmark, what should I do?

Dr. Mathew Katz, said that according to the American Dermatologists Association (ADA), that most birthmarks does not raise any health risks or dangers to infants and are best if left alone. Though there are some cases that a birthmark can grow and potentially cause complications especially if they are around the eyes, lips, nose or in the groin area. I advise that one visit a dermatologist, such as our dermatology clinic in Rockville, Maryland (MD), Katz Dermatology, to determine if your birthmark pose a risks on health and the most suitable dermatological treatment for you.

What are the dermatology services for birthmarks?

We provide a wide range of Surgical Dermatology, Aesthetic Dermatology and Cosmetic Dermatology services and treatments designed for birthmarks such as scalpel surgery, laser treatments and cosmetic dermatology products such as creams and ointments.

As we said a while ago, there are different kinds of treatment and services for different kinds and cases of birthmarks. In most cases, our aesthetic dermatology service which is through laser treatments, which lightens the affected area of the skin often works better especially to younger children. There are only rare cases that surgical dermatology services are necessary such as in cases of Congenital melanocytic nevi (CMN), which affects a person's appearance.
