What is Skin Cancer?

Skin cancer is simply defined by dermatologists as the abnormal growth and development of the skin. It is considered one of the most common kinds of cancer in the world. Skin cancer develops often on the upper layer of the skin.

According to skin experts, specifically dermatologist, it is commonly caused by too much exposure to Ultraviolet (UV) Rays especially artificial sources, such as tanning beds.

Are there classifications or different types of skin cancer?

Dr. Mathew Katz said that there are at least three common kinds or classification of skin cancer.

  • Basal Cell Carcinoma – It is the most common type of skin cancer and usually appears on the parts of our body directly exposed to the sun such as our heads and hands. It could appear as a dome-shaped skin growth having noticeable blood vessels or scaly, flaky, shiny pink or red patch or something that might look like a scar which feels waxy and hard.
  • Squamous Cell Carcinoma – Appears to parts of the body exposed to the sun for a long time. Signs of this kind of skin cancer are the following.
  • A bump or lump on the skin that can feel rough.
  • As the bump or lump grows, it may become dome-shaped or crusty and can bleed.
  • A sore that doesn’t heal, or heals and returns.
  • Flat, reddish, scaly patch that grows slowly (Bowen’s disease).
  • In rare cases, SCC begins under a nail, which can grow and destroy the nail.
  • Melanoma
