What are Warts?

Dermatologists describe warts as a skin growth which are often small in size and are caused by a certain kind of a virus called as human papillomavirus or HPV for short. Warts are generally harmless but are contagious, since they are caused by a virus.

The virus, HPV, causes the top layer of the skin which is the keratin to grow too fast. The process makes the skin growth which is normally small and could appear in any part of the body. There are different kinds of warts that look differently and depend on the infected area.

What are the different types of Warts?

Our dermatologist, Dr. Mathew Katz, classifies at least 5 common types of warts.

  • Common Warts - this kind of wart often appears on the hands, but could also appear on different parts of the body. It is characterized by being round in shape like a dome which is usually appear gray-brown in color.
  • Plantar Warts - These kinds of warts appears on the sole of the patient feet, which could cause discomfort to the patient. This certain kind of wart appears solid, thick patches that may appear with dark specks.
  • Flat Warts - are certain kind of warts that could look pink, light yellow or light brown having a flat top which are generally small.
  • Filiform Warts - These are small, thread like warts that usually appear near the nose, mouth and beard part of the face.
  • Periungual Warts - Warts that appears under the fingernails and toenails are classified in this kind of wart.

How Does Warts Spread?

Dermatologist explains that warts could easily spread with direct physical contact. It could be passed from one part of the body to another by touch. Infecting other person could be in the form of sharing personal items such as handkerchief, towels, and razors.
